There are many reasons why people go to the gym everyday and put themselves through intense workouts. For some, it is a way to relieve stress at the end of a hard day at work. Others dream of being on the cover of a magazine such as BodyFitness someday, and there are many who want to look good to make their weekend evenings a little more exciting. Then there are some like national-level NPC Figure competitor Nancy Fuentes who do it for all the right reasons. She does it to keep her body in top shape, maintain maximum health, build self-esteem, be a positive role model for others, and to also push herself to find out what she is capable of. Nancy Fuentes could never win a show in her life, but she would still be a champion.
The funniest thing about Nancy’s success on the Figure stage is that she was once too intimidated by the free-weight room to go in and train with weights. She stuck strictly with aerobics classes, which she was quite adept at, and she even began teaching aerobic classes at age 15. After a while, Nancy slowly built up her confidence in the gym and ventured into the free weight room. Now this keg of dynamite trains using Mike Mentzer’s High Intensity training principles, and her favorite exercise is the dead-lift! As she saw the free weights change her body, her self-confidence grew more and more. Looking at her pictures, it is easy to see why! How many women who are over 40 and have two kids do you know who look like that?
Nancy enjoyed the successes that lifting and aerobics brought to her body so much, that she chose Personal Training as a career. She operates her own training business, and that allows her the opportunity to make a living teaching others how to train with weights, do aerobics, and eat a healthy diet. Her biggest enjoyment in life is watching her clients progress and achieve their goals. There are many people out there who not only look much better, but feel much better about themselves because of Nancy’s efforts.
Nancy works just as hard on her personal training business as she does her training. She needs to. With one child already in college and another going to college next year, a single mother has no choice but to be diligent and tenacious. Nancy is proud that her hard work ethic has rubbed off on her children, and they have grown into flourishing young adults who both have bright futures. Of all the things that Nancy has accomplished, if you ask her what she is most proud of, she is quick to tell you that her greatest accomplishment is being a single parent and raising two children who are good people as well as productive and positive parts of society.
Their mother isn’t done yet either. Nancy is still in the free-weight room every single day, training with unbridled intensity. As a perennial top placer in both the NPC Masters Figure Nationals and the IFBB North Americans, which are both pro qualifiers, she has established herself as one of the premier Figure competitors in the United States. Nancy is one of the top guns in the Figure game, and that IFBB professional qualification is on her wanted list. It will not be long before she has it locked up and in custody.
A champion is a winner, a defender, a supporter, and a campaigner. Nancy has won the battle of self-confidence. Nancy defends her family and will be working hard to preserve their future. Nancy supports her clients with all of her energy and knowledge to make them achieve as much as they possibly could. Finally, Nancy campaigns the virtues of the fitness lifestyle to all of those around her, and she is also on a campaign to defeat her toughest opponent…herself. Greatness is not always measured by how many trophies you win.
